Pay Structure: Starting wage is $26.18 per hour. Step increase annually to $34.03 ($54,449 - $70,784 annually) based on competency and performance.

Description Summary: Under the supervision of the Building Official or other supervisory personnel, the candidate is responsible for inspecting new and existing commercial, industrial, and residential structures for compliance with the approved documents and code requirements. Some residential plan review may be required. Training will be provided.

Job Duties:

  • Conducts inspections of building sites to ensure compliance with local and state building codes.
  • Inspects materials and construction to ensure compliance with approved plans and specifications.
  • Seeks compliance where standards are not met, advises corrections, issues violations as needed, and performs re-inspections to bring the structure into compliances.
  • Responds to inquiries from owners, contractors, governmental entities, architects, developers, business owners, and the general public regarding code interpretation, violations, complaints, department policies and procedures and general information.
  • Provides information and advice regarding building code requirements and construction procedures and offers assistance in making applications for permits.
  • Investigates complaints, prepares reports and correspondence.
  • Reviews plans of residential building projects for compliance with codes and ordinances.
  • Approves permit applications for construction or remodeling when requirements are met.
  • Keeps current with continuing education - attends conferences, workshops, and seminars as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

Qualifications:

  • Registered by the State of Michigan as a Plan Reviewer and Inspector. A minimum of 3 years of experience in residential and commercial inspections and some knowledge of plan review techniques.
  • Experience with BS&A permitting software is a plus.
  • Plan review experience is a plus
  • Michigan Vehicle Operator's License and a good driving record.
